Cougars continue to raise bar during spring semester

HOUSTON - With the spring academic semester concluded, the University of Houston Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced that its student-athletes posted the highest grade-point average in school history during the spring semester with a 2.79.

This comes as the latest achievement for the Cougars, as 140 student-athletes were selected to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll last month (3.0 GPA or higher), which was a 20 percent increase from last season's 117 honorees.

“We’re so proud of our student-athletes who are balancing academics and athletics so successfully, and our coaches who expect achievement in the classroom as well as on the playing field,” said Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development Maria Peden. “We look forward to continued improvements for each and every team.”

Molly Alvey’s volleyball squad posted the highest departmental GPA at 3.37, while four other teams also surpassed the 3.0 GPA mark (softball – 3.30, swimming – 3.25, tennis – 3.17, baseball – 3.05).

The baseball, football, men’s basketball, men’s track and field, softball and volleyball squads have reached its highest GPA in school history, while nine teams showed an overall improvement from the previous semester.

A total of 58 Cougars posted a 3.5 GPA or higher, accounting for 17 percent of all student-athletes making the Dean’s List, which is also a first in school history.  Not only did UH student-athletes show a significant increase in GPA during the spring semester, but the Cougars also passed an average of 13.7 hours, which is also a new school record. A total of 96 percent of student-athletes are currently in good academic standing, with a perfect 100 percent mark coming from seven athletic squads.
