Senior Earns Program’s First All-America Selection Since 1994
University of Houston senior middle blocker Lucy Charuk was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America Third Team on Wednesday. Charuk becomes the first Cougar volleyball All-American since Lily Denoon in 1994.
This is the first All-American selection for the Tswwassen, British Columbia, native after garnering three career AVCA All-Region Team selections. Following both All-Region selections, she went on to be named an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention.
“First, I am so incredibly happy for Lucy,” head coach Molly Alvey said. “What an amazing award for her to have earned. Lucy's contributions to this team and to our program have added maturity to our pursuit of excellence as a team. Her focus and experience have propelled her into performing as an elite athlete and an exceptionally gifted leader.”
“This award is incredibly significant to our volleyball program. Our staff, our players and I have been working to put Houston volleyball back in the national spotlight. Lucy's recognition as an All-American is a very clear sign that we are moving in the right direction at exponential speed.”
Charuk, a three-time First Team All Conference USA selection, led the Cougars with 365 kills and a .390 hitting percentage. She also has a team-high 159 blocks, averaging 1.38 per set.
She leaves Houston as the school career leader in hitting percentage, second in blocks and block assists, fifth in solo blocks and eighth in blocks per set. Charuk recorded double-digit kills in 22 matches this season and had at least five blocks in 19 matches.
Charuk found herself ranked among the conference leaders in multiple categories at the end of the regular season. She led the league in hitting percentage, ranked second in blocks and fifth in points. She was 14th in the NCAA in blocks per set and 16th in hitting percentage.
Charuk was a vital member of the 2011 volleyball squad that finished with a 19-11 record and a 12-8 C-USA mark.
