Alvey, Junior National Team Defeat Great Britain National Team
A2 Junior National Team Preps For European Global Challenge In Croatia
HOUSTON – University of Houston head volleyball coach Molly Alvey helped coach the A2 Junior National Team to a big win overseas. The USA National Team battled back from an early 0-2 deficit to defeat the Great Britain National Team in five sets.
After dropping the first two games of the match, the Junior National Team responded with scores of 30-28, 25-15 and 15-10 in the final three sets to win the match against the team that Great Britain will send to compete in the 2010 London Olympics.
Jordan Shaw led the way for the USA with 13 kills, while Inky Ajanaku and Nicole Walch each added 12 kills. The British National Team only had one player reach double-digit kills, while the US team had three.
The exhibition match was part of a training camp with the Great Britain National Team.
Following the training camp, the A2 Junior National Team traveled to Croatia on July 17 for the European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia. The opening ceremonies for the European Global Challenge were held on July 17 and the tournament is scheduled to take place July 18-21.
The A2 Junior National Team is one of six teams from the US that will compete in the tournament as well as teams from Slovenia, Romania, Italy, Montenegro, Croatia and the Czech Republic.
Before returning to the United States on July 23, the team will spend the final day of its trip sightseeing in Venice, Italy.
Alvey is a member of the A2 Junior National Team along with Santiago Restrepo of Oklahoma and Brook Coulter of Georgia.
